Abuse Prevention and Reporting

Wyoming State Laws and Regulations on Abuse Prevention and Mandatory Reporting

Mandatory Reporting Requirements

Under Wyoming state law, all individuals have a legal obligation to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

If the individual reporting is a staff member of a medical, educational, or other public/private institution, school, facility, or agency, they must notify the person in charge or their designated agent. That individual then becomes responsible for ensuring the report is made as soon as possible.

Note: This provision does not relieve any individual of their personal duty to report unless it has already been confirmed that a report has been or will be filed.

Employer Protections:

Any employer—public or private—who discharges, suspends, disciplines, or penalizes an employee solely for making a report of neglect or abuse is guilty of a misdemeanor. This may result in imprisonment for up to 6 months, a fine of up to $750, or both.

When a Report Is Required
A report must be made when any of the following apply:

  • A person knows or has reasonable cause to believe or suspect that a child has been abused or neglected.
  • A person observes a child being subjected to conditions or circumstances likely to result in abuse or neglect.
  • A minor is a victim of female genital mutilation (FGM).
